Yamaha DTX900 Series Drums Winter NAMM 2010 Demo

More info at www.sweetwater.com. The DTX900 series (the DTX950K and the DTX900K) features the DTX-PAD and Yamaha’s new T.C.S (Textured Cellular Silicone) technology, which offers drummers an expressive playing experience. Small air bubbles create a foamed silicone surface purported to provide playability and feel unlike any other pad so that even the most jaded acoustic drummer will feel right at home. The DTX900 drum module borrows its technology from the Motif XS for expressive articulation.

    @moxxi DTX950K and …
    @moxxi DTX950K and DTX900K have won “BEST IN SHOW” at NAMM. They said it feels like acoustic head drums.

    IMHO, the sound and feel are more important than the look. I admit, TD20KX looks more beautiful. But lesser rack system? nah…, Hex Rack is designed for acoustic drums. How cool is that.

    And the best thing about DTX950k is you can put third party sound library (DTXpansion) on that module, which will kick TD20 sound at any day.

    I’ve been to the …
    I’ve been to the Winter NAMM show and I can say this about the Pearl Epro.
    1. The brain is a rebranded Alesis DM10.
    2. The pads feel bad and lack dynamics especially on the rim, where there is only one dynamic.
    3. The cymbals are rebranded Alesis Surge/ Smart trigger cymbals.

    The Diamond kit …
    The Diamond kit looks interesting, I’ve never heard about it before. If the trigger function still works with regular heads, it’s a pretty cool concept. The prices are actually frighteningly low…
    The thing is, though, that if Pearl makes something, it’s normally quite good quality wise, and quality is obviously a risky side to buying a more unknown kit like Diamond’s. Thus, the Achille’s heel of the ePro imo. is the electronic part, the rest should be pretty good.

    For most users of …
    For most users of digital drums, the lack of noise is the number one reason for buying, and that effectively rules out the brass cymbals. It’s lame that Pearl hasn’t released a video of a thorough walk-through of their module, let’s hope they’re not trying to hide something? The sounds appear ok to me, but it’s hard to tell… One last fact that really disappoints me is the lack of rim shot sensitivity. How in the world would Pearl ignore such a detail facing what the competitors have to offer?

  10. Trommealvar on April 28, 2010 at 8:52 am

    don’t really have …
    don’t really have faith in the ePro. It’s ridiculous to sell it as electric AND acoustic kit – who wants to pay 3000 $ for a poplar kit? A better way to solve that problem would imo be to offer an “ePro option” when buying an acoustic kit, to increase the flexibility. The ePro kit is propably aimed at players who want to use electronic drums live, but don’t want to look too “modern” I guess.. Also, brass cymbals are propably aimed at live use, where the noise they mike doesn’t matter that much.

    Have you seen or …
    Have you seen or heard the Pearl ePro Live kit? Looks interesting. Or the Diamond drums out of the UK? Those are both similar ideas – real kits outfitted with electronics/triggers. I like the look of that Pearl but I’d be interested in a closer look at the module.

    On Sam Ash this kit …
    On Sam Ash this kit is retailing for an MSRP of $7119.99 but priced at $4300.00. That seems like a pretty fair market price. It has fewer drums than the TD-20KX, lesser rack system, and far less exciting look but if looks aren’t an issue, then I think could be a very good contender for the upper echelons of electronic drums. I would even take the look of the TD-12 over this kit. But if I was playing it just at home or recording, I wouldn’t care as long as the feel & sound were present.

  14. moxxi on April 28, 2010 at 8:52 am

    I own a TD-20KX kit …
    I own a TD-20KX kit, so I’m quite aware of what it looks like. I wasn’t dissing the sound of this kit, just the look of it. I wanted an electronic kit that felt great, looked great and sounded great – and had separate outs to be applicable in every possible recording and performing situation. This kit most likely sounds like a million bucks, but it just doesn’t have the look I’m after. It does look it has 6 separate outs, which is a good thing. If it’s a few grand less than a TD20KX, then great.

    What I’d like is for pads like these, but without the excessive drum module, since I’ll be triggering Superior Drummer anyway.

    Pearls new electronic kit seems alot better

    What’s the price? …
    What’s the price? Is the brain comparable to the TD-20X, with separate outs for each instrument? The look is horrible in my opinion. Are they meant as competition to the TD-20KX? If so, mission failed. If they are a few thousand less, than fine. I’m sure they sound great and would be excellent in a studio setting (with separate outs) but they look cheap. And yes, the dude playing the kit had some excellent chops. He was the best part of the video. These should retail at under 4K.

  21. stevenmcnair1897 on April 28, 2010 at 8:52 am

    Well….consider …
    Well….consider the actual silicon pads are quite loud, so your hearing a lot of that because the Module sound output is low so the Demoing guy can speak. straight from the output or speakers, I really Can’t tell….I’m a drummer and Got my Yamaha tour Kit free from Yamaha. The quality of these sounds Is just as good as the best drum software out there…I’ve heard the DTXtremeII in a studio And NO ONE can complain. that being said…Rolands do look better. Yamaha is about the sound. The best.

    if it was an acoustic kit it would still sound realistic even with a crappy camera mic. These sound electronic.

    @Bansh33nl. The …
    @Bansh33nl. The new Pearl E-ProLive drums look like acoustic drums, which is asthetically more pleasing, but for my tastes, if I wanted them to look like acoustic drums, I’d just play my acoustic drums.

    Yamaha e-drum kit’s work and sound great, but they’re so ugly in my eyes. If they make everything look more like an acoustic kit I will step away from roland

    @hawksfan5151 – I’m surprised it’s so difficult for all of these reviews to simply plug a stereo pair into a small recorder so we could hear the direct sound.
