Wrist pains from drum pads?

I got my Alesis Performance Pad (electronic drum kit with rubber drum pads) today, and after playing it for a few hours my right wrist is really sore. Is this because of my technique, or because of the hard rubber drum pads, or both? How can I make it hurt less?

It sounds like it could be an issue of both causing the pain in your wrists, but I would recommend checking with your doctor as well to see what they say.
