Should I buy an Alesis USB Pro electronic drum kit?

I’m going to be moving from a house to an apt so I need to switch from acoustic to electronic drums because of noise. My only goal is to record on my mac. I know there are a lot of killer midi drum samples out there and I’m looking at getting an alesis usbpro to trigger them in cubase. Is this kit very quiet with it’s real drum heads and cymbals? Also, are there any alternatives that are better or cheaper for what I want to do?

the Alesis USBPro is awesome. I used to have one when I was in my apartment, and sold it when I moved into my house. I loved that thing! I don’t think you would be disappointed by it.

Also, you should join an online forum for recording geeks like yourself, who can really benefit from other people’s information. Forums are awesome because of that. This one in particular – http://www.audioneeds.com – is filled with tons of pro sound engineers who sit around all day answering questions for people who need help with their recordings… I’m sure it’ll help.

Five dollar DIY USB MIDI drum pad

using a silicon key pad as a drum pad in ableton live with a simple max patch to convert keystrokes to midi. pretty comfortable to play and very functional for five bucks!

Can I just use an amp for electronic drums Roland RMP-5?

i wanna use Roland RMP-5 on my drumset for the triggers it has. can i just hook it up directly to my amp, or do i have to connect it to some kind of electronic drum trigger center thing too?

The RMP-5 will work as a mod im pretty sure. Yeah, send it to an amp. And plug in your triggers from your kick and hi-hat, pick your samples. It should work. :/

Electronic drum kits?

I live in an apartment and I get home from work late but Id like to learn to play drums. I dont want to disturb the neighbours but I want to learn. I saw an electronic drum kit in a store today and someone was playing it with head phones and I couldn’t hear a thing. That gave me the idea I could learn. Are these electronic kits any good? Are they worth learning on and can you transfer the skills to acoustic kits? And are they the best option noise wise or can you muffle an acoustic kit enough to be quiet enough to play in an apartment late at night without disturbing neighbours on the other side of the wall?

You would have to get a fairly expensive one for it to be worth buying. At least $700.

My brother in law is a drummer and uses a fancy Roland kit in their townhouse. I’ve played it as well.
it’s pretty cool and with the sound module you can get a lot of varied drum kit sounds.
However , it does have drawbacks…the feel of the drums is a bit off. It’s very hard to do snare rolls on a electronic snare pad. The cymbals are rubber pads so you don’t get the same rebound feel off of them.
They are better for a drummer who already plays and knows his techniques already, and just needs a quiet kit to jam on in a quiet environment.

Muffling an acoustic set is not going to help much in an apartment. You can transfer most of what you do on an elec. kit to a normal kit, for instance keeping a beat and most rhythmic adventures can translate, but nuances are lost.

My Brother in law does recordings in the studio with his electronic kit…you can’t really tell the difference, as far as that goes, if he is doing the beat and doesn’t get too complicated with the fills.

I am looking to buy a roland electronic practice snare drum. my budget is under 90 dollars. it does not have to be brand new or anything. Can u please help me? thank you very much.

If it is for practice why not just use a practice pad, you don’t need it to be amplified just to work on stick control, etc. I would recommend this Evans practice pad at $50.00, the Roland rhythm coach sells for almost $300 so I doubt that you will find a used one for $90.
